Without doubt the highlight of this Community Service year was the ANZAC Centenary commemoration for schools at the Boronia Arboretum on the 24th April. PP Glenn Tippett and President Mieke worked extremely hard to overcome numerous difficulties to eventually enable the Club to present an outstanding celebration of the 100 anniversary of ANZAC.
Six schools: Boronia Heights Primary School, The Basin Primary School, Knox Central Primary School, St Joseph’s Primary School, Yarralinda School and Park Ridge Primary School attended with over 230 students and staff.
The event was well supported by local politicians Alan Tudge MP and Nick Wakeling MLC as well as local Council representatives in attendance. PP Leigh Elsey did an excellent job as Master of Ceremonies, PP Annette Haworth read excerpts from her grandmother’s boyfriend’s letters from the front, and Knox Cr John Mortimore spoke passionately about his grandfather’s experiences at Gallipoli.
The day was enhanced by music of the period provided by the Maroondah Brass band and the students were thrilled to receive the medals provided by the District to celebrate the occasion.
PP Glenn and the Club Members who assisted on the day as ushers need to be all congratulated. The feedback from all schools has been excellent and they certainly want to be involved in future. Hopefully, now that the hard work has been done this event will continue in future.
