Long term support of Taveuni Eye Project recognised …

At our weekly meeting on 2nd April, Rotary Club of Boronia member, Peter Malden was named a Ruby Paul Harris Fellow1 in recognition of his outstanding and tireless work in support of the Taveuni Eye Project.  Two members of the Rotary Club of Newmarket in New Zealand, Dave Birch and Roger Harvey, joined the meeting via Zoom to make the presentation.2

The Taveuni Eye Project, which the Rotary Club of Taveuni Island, Fiji has been running since 2005, is aimed at giving/restoring sight to children and adults from remote rural areas of Fiji.  It has been strongly supported by both the Rotary Club of Newmarket and the Rotary Club of Boronia during that time.

Peter’s involvement with the Taveuni Eye Project commenced in 2015, extending his (and the Rotary Club of Boronia’s) ongoing involvement in a variety of projects being undertaken in conjunction with the Rotary Club of Taveuni Island, with which we established a “sister club” relationship.  Initially assuming a care/support role during surgical operations, Peter was soon involved in organisation and management of the annual project instalments, filling the role of Lead Project Manager in more recent years.3  In undertaking these roles, Peter liaised closely with members of the Rotary Clubs of Newmarket and Taveuni Island.

Peter’s involvement in the Taveuni Eye Project has been keenly supported by his wife Jan, who also travelled to Fiji and provided patient care/support on most occasions.

Congratulations Peter!
