Since 2005, our Sister Club, the Rotary Club of Taveuni Island has been running the Taveuni Eye Project, the primary goal of which is to give sight to children and adults from remote rural areas of Fiji. The project changes the lives of hundreds of the poorest Fijians each year by restoring their eye sight.
Principally through the efforts of Past President Peter Malden and wife Jan, the Rotary Club of Boronia has been heavily involved in the organisation and facilitation of the project over the last six years. The 13th annual project was successfully completed over two weeks from 1st October to 12th October 2018. Sight was restored to a total of 328 Fijian eyes; procedures completed included 227 Cataract removals, 97 Pterygium removals, 1 Yag Laser treatment and 3 other operations.
Further details of the 2018 project can be found in the project report. An overview of the project can be found here.
The Taveuni Eye Project is an official Rotary Australia World Community Service (RAWCS) project; Project Number: 129-2010-11 Taveuni Eye Project and Building and allied projects for schools and hospitals on Taveuni and surrounding islands, Fiji.
